Sidoo Family Giving Champions the Next Generation

Among the standout teams competing is Air Raid Academy, a nationally ranked powerhouse in the U-12 division with recognition in both Canada and the United States. Thanks to the generous support of the Sidoo Family Giving Foundation, Air Raid Academy is taking the field with a mission beyond just winning—their participation represents opportunity and accessibility for young athletes who otherwise may not have had the chance to compete.
Sidoo Family Giving’s sponsorship has directly covered fees for players who could not afford to enter, ensuring that talent—not financial barriers—determines who gets to chase their dreams. In doing so, the foundation has given these young athletes a stage to showcase their skills, compete at the highest level, and inspire future generations of football players in Vancouver and beyond.

David Sidoo: Paying It Forward and Growing Sports in Vancouver

For David Sidoo, contributing to young athletes is more than just a sponsorship—it’s personal. Growing up in New Westminster, David didn’t have the financial means to pursue his football dreams. But thanks to the generosity and guidance of his coaches, he was given an opportunity to attend a football camp that changed his life forever. That experience led him on a path to playing professionally, proving that access to opportunities can shape destinies.
Now, through the Sidoo Family Giving Foundation, David is paying it forward, ensuring that today’s young athletes have the same life-changing opportunities he once received. His contributions to sports in Vancouver extend beyond 7v7 football; he has been instrumental in growing the game at all levels, particularly through his unwavering support of UBC Football. As a former UBC Thunderbird and a long-time advocate for youth sports, David has helped fund scholarships, facilities, and programs that have elevated the university’s football program and strengthened the city’s athletic community.
David’s passion for growing sports in Canada is also reflected in his support of New Westminster High School football, where he has helped provide over 60 scholarships for student-athletes to attend colleges across North America. Additionally, he has been a driving force behind initiatives like the Kids Play World Cup of Soccer, which gives children from all backgrounds a chance to play, compete, and build lifelong skills through sport. His commitment to youth sports isn’t just about competition—it’s about giving kids a sense of purpose, belonging, and the chance to dream big.

Michael O’Connor: Paying It Forward in Football

Michael O’Connor, the coach of the U-14 Air Raid team, is no stranger to the power of mentorship and opportunity. As a key player in UBC’s Vanier Cup championship-winning team in 2015, Mike experienced firsthand the transformative power of support and guidance in the football community.
Mike shared, “When I was at UBC, I was fortunate to be part of a program that was on the verge of folding until David revived the UBC football program after transferring from Penn State. That moment changed everything for me—it gave me the opportunity to chase my dreams and succeed. Now, as a coach, my goal is to do the same for these young athletes. David’s mentorship not only helped shape my career, but it gave me a platform to believe in myself. I want to pay that forward—to help these kids succeed, both on and off the field, and hopefully give them the opportunities to build their own future, just as David did for me.”

A Word from David Sidoo

“In my youth, I was fortunate to have coaches and mentors who saw my potential and gave me opportunities I could never have afforded on my own. Their belief in me changed the course of my life, allowing me to pursue my dreams of playing professional football. Now, through Sidoo Family Giving, I want to ensure that no talented young athlete is denied an opportunity due to financial barriers. Battle at the Border is more than just a tournament—it’s a movement that embodies the values of access, community, and excellence.” — David Sidoo
